In Europe and Italy, the legislation on Food Contact Materials provides for restrictions and rules related to the authorization of processes, if recycled polymers are used.

In Europe, EU Regulation 1616/2022 has entered into force, which repeals Regulation (EC) No. 282/2008 and provides the following definitions: recycling technology (e.g. mechanical polyester process) and recycling process (set of operations involving the application of recycling technology). The new Regulation provides for the evaluation of the recycling technology and not of the process, unlike what was provided for by Reg. 282/2008.

Food Contact Center helps in study and execution of “Challenge Test”, evaluating the decontamination process of the material through screening analysis with HS GC MS, GC MS and HPLC QTOF analytical techniques.

On the paper matrix Food Contact Center has developed a project thanks to the synergy with the CNR of Pisa for the optimization of the chromatographic analysis of recycled paper contaminants.
