MICROPLASTICS
Microplastics Analysis Service
Microplastics are one of the most critical environmental challenges of our time. Defined by ECHA as solid or semi-solid particles smaller than 5 mm, they can be primary (directly released into the environment) or secondary (resulting from the degradation of larger plastic objects). Microplastic pollution not only threatens marine ecosystems but also poses serious risks to human health.
Regulatory Framework
Regulation EU 2023/2055 marks a significant advancement in regulating intentionally added microplastics in products, introducing specific restrictions on the use of synthetic polymer microparticles. The regulation sets strict limits and precise definitions, making it essential for companies to ensure product compliance.

Our Support
Food Contact Center supports companies in tackling this challenge. We offer advanced analysis and consultancy services for:
- Microplastic Presence Assessment: We use cutting-edge analytical techniques such as FTIR, TGA-DSC, and migration testing in compliance with UNI EN 645 and UNI EN 647 standards.
- Compliance Control: We verify product compliance with current regulations, supporting FCM producers and other related industries.
- Technical Consultancy: We actively participate in international working groups (ILSI, Assocarta), enabling us to provide always up-to-date and high-quality services.
Case Study
We recently analyzed the presence of microplastics in products declared “Plastic Free,” such as straws and paper cups. FTIR tests revealed the presence of undeclared polymeric materials, confirmed by further TGA-DSC analyses and migration tests in hot and cold water. These results highlight the importance of rigorous checks to ensure truthful and compliant declarations.
