REACH & RoHS

REACH (Registration, Evaluation, Authorization and Restriction of Chemicals) and RoHS (Restriction of Hazardous Substances) are two essential European regulations aimed at ensuring safety and sustainability in the use of chemicals and materials, protecting both the environment and human health.

REACH: This European regulation (Reg. EC 1907/2006) governs the production and use of chemical substances. Its primary objective is to identify and control chemicals that may pose a risk to health or the environment. A crucial aspect of REACH is the management of SVHC (Substances of Very High Concern), substances that may require authorization for use or be subject to restrictions.

RoHS: This regulation (Dir. 2011/65/EU and subsequent updates) focuses on limiting the use of certain hazardous substances in electrical and electronic materials. Restricted substances include lead, mercury, cadmium, hexavalent chromium, and specific flame retardants.

REACH and RoHS Testing

Compliance with REACH and RoHS regulations requires careful assessment and conformity verification, translated into specific testing activities:

  • For REACH:
    • SVHC Analysis: Identification and quantification of substances of very high concern in products and materials. The SVHC list is regularly updated by the European Chemicals Agency (ECHA).
    • Compliance Evaluation: Verification that limits for specific substances are respected.
    • Material Lifecycle Monitoring: Analyses to avoid risks associated with the use and disposal of chemicals.
  • For RoHS:
    • Specific chemical analyses to detect the presence of restricted substances in electrical and electronic components.
    • Compliance verification with regulatory limits for substances such as lead, cadmium, mercury, and hexavalent chromium.
